The Advisory Committee on the Regional Environment (ACRE) is a voluntary organization of fifteen members who represent or have affiliations with 35 other environmental advocacy groups in the Waikato. ACRE has been in existence since 1989.
ACRE’s role is to
·To advise the Regional Council Environment Waikato ( EW) on new policy matters
·To comment on the implications of existing policies
·To alert the Council to matters in need of attention
·To liaise with groups sharing similar aims
·To act as a forum for ideas and concerns
·To monitor progress and recommend on any matters that need further investigation and research
·Where practicable to network and promote good practices in the region.
ACRE has a place on: WCEET (Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust), Waipa District Council’s Heritage and Conservation Committee and Matamata-Piako District Council’s Conservation Zone Review.
Nominations for membership are invited annually from people or groups/organisations within the Waikato Region by public notice in a publication circulating widely in the region (e.g. Envirocare) and by notice specifically to such groups or organisations having an interest in the environment as ACRE may from time to time decide. Nominees will be required to indicate their support of ACRE’s Objects and to indicate their acceptance of the nomination and of the duties of membership.
ACRE meets in Hamilton on the second Thursday of every month (except in January) from 5.30pm - 8:00pm. Secretarial support is provided by Environment Waikato.
