Energy tips

After water heating, the fridge is the single biggest household electricity-user and the most expensive appliance in your home to run.

Fridges are usually the most power-hungry appliance in your house. A typical fridge-freezer uses around 500 kWh a year, and accounts for about 15% of your household electricity bill.

• Buy smarter. The most energy efficient fridges carry the blue Energy Star mark.
• Use more efficiently. Keep a well stocked fridge (a full fridge is an efficient fridge!). And check your fridge occasionally to make sure it's working properly. Things to check are that fridge seals are tight, the thermostat is working, and that gas hasn't been lost.
• Recycle. A fridge over 10 years old is an expensive luxury - it could be costing an extra $200 a year to run. So ditch that old dunga in the garage!
